What are some of the times in your life you may have found most difficult? Periods that may have challenged your patience may have been raising children or teenagers, marriage relations, or health issues. All of us face these difficulties but we often handle them differently. If you have had surgery, a serious disease or injury you know it takes time for the body to heal. While patience does not solve difficult issues, it can, however, make the process easier to handle. Patience allows us time to think and reflect on things, to see situations from a different perspective. It allows us to gain new insights which leads to better decision making and hopefully improved results. Like other traits and virtues, patience helps define our character.

We use the word "please" most commonly in an attempt to convey good manners or to induce someone into doing something for us. Near the end of Paul's letter to the Romans, he uses the word three times in as many verses so as to remind early and modern Christians about some key things. In Romans 15:1, he says we ought to bear with the weaknesses of others but not so as to please ourselves. In the next verse, he says that we should make every effort to please our neighbors so that they might be edified. And in Romans 15:3, the apostle points out that Christ didn't live on earth attempting to please Himself but rather focused His attention on making the lives of others better.
It's abundantly clear that Paul's use of this word is a deliberate attempt by the Holy Spirit to help us understand that our ultimate goal in life ought to be pleasing our God. In doing so, our focus must be on others. Let us do all we can to please others and please God and when our lives on earth are over, we'll truly be able to reflect on our efforts and be pleased ourselves with our efforts in service to our wonderful God.

But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. ... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
